titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the production of polythioureas
abstract In making polythioureas by reacting substantially equimolecular proportions of carbon bisulphide and a diamine, the amino groups of which are separated by a chain containing at least 3 carbon atoms, and heating the resulting intermediate salt until a fibre-forming thermoplastic is formed, the carbon bisulphide is reacted in the form of an aqueous emulsion with the diamine. The aqueous emulsion of carbon bisulphide is preferably formed in situ by adding carbon bisulphide containing one soap-forming ingredient such as oleic acid. To a stirred aqueous solution of the diamine containing a second soap-forming ingredient such as triethanolamine or ammonia which reacts with the oleic acid to form an emulsifying agent in situ. In further embodiments a minor part of the diamine itself may be used as the second component of the emulsifying agent, or a preformed aqueous emulsion of CS2 may be added to the diamine or to a solution thereof in water, alcohol or aqueous alcohol. The use of a slight excess of CS2, e.g. 5 per cent, is preferred, and the temperature of the reaction mixture is preferably kept low, e.g. from 0 DEG to 25 DEG C. The intermediate salt formed, usually as an aqueous paste, may be purified by washing with cold water and then heated, for example, under pressure in the presence of water or steam as in Specification 524,795. In examples: (1, 3) hexamethylene diamine is reacted with CS2, ethanolamine oleate being formed in situ, and the resulting intermediate salt heated under pressure to form a polythiourea soluble in phenol, creosol and formic acid; insoluble and infusible material may be removed from the product by dissolving in a solvent, filtering and precipitating in the presence of electrolytes, and occluded moisture and gases may be removed by heating under reduced pressure; (2) hexamethylene diamine is reacted with an aqueous emulsion of CS2, the precipitated intermediate salt being separated and treated as in (1). Other diamines specified are decamethylene diamine and 1,4-di-(methylamino)-benzene. Fibres produced from the products by melt spinning and capable of being cold drawn. Specification 534,699 also is referred to.
