abstract | Double silicates of zirconium of the formula RZrSiO2, wherein R is a divalent metal, for example, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, lead or even zirconium itself, for use in ceramic mixes, are treated to reduce their thixotropic properties by the addition to an aqueous suspension of the double silicate of phosphoric acid or a substance generating phosphoric acid on heating, e.g. an ammonium or aniline salt of phosphoric acid, removal of the treated silicate, and heating, e.g. to 350 DEG -400 DEG F. The phosphoric acid &c. is added in amount corresponding to 2-9 per cent P2O5 reckoned on the dry weight of the silicate to produce a pH of 7 or less. |
