titleOfInvention Improvements in method for the production of bromophenacetin
abstract Para-(bromoethoxy) acetanilide is obtained by mixing hot alcoholic solutions of paraacetylamino phenol and ethylene dibromide, the latter being in excess. An alkali salt of the phenol may be used, and anhydrous alcoholic solutions are preferred. Thorough mixing is effected by stirring, and prevents formation of by-products. In an example the preparation of the sodium salt of p-acetamidophenol by the action of sodium dissolved in absolute alcohol on the phenol, followed by reacting with an alcoholic solution of ethylene dibromide, is described. The product is purified with charcoal, filtered hot and crystallized by chilling.
