titleOfInvention Separation of acrolein from propionaldehyde
abstract Acrolein and propionaldehyde are separated from a mixture thereof by fractional distillation whilst introducing furfural into the column near its head. In an example a mixture containing propionaldehyde and acrolein in proportion 92.3 : 7.7 and also containing acetals is fractionally distilled using a reflux ratio of 5 : 1 and introducing 2 parts of furfural to the top of the column just below the reflux inlet for each volume of condensate removed from the system. The condensate contains 98 per cent propionaldehyde, 0.34 per cent acrolein and acetals, and the acrolein-furfural mixture removed from the base of the column is distilled and the furfural recycled.
