titleOfInvention Thermo-reversible gels
abstract A thermo-reversible gel is prepared by treating in acidified aqueous solution a water-soluble polymeric material containing a free oxocarbonyl group with a water-soluble polyhydrazide of a polycarboxylic acid, preferably a dihydrazide of a dicarboxylic acid, examples of suitable compounds being carbodihydrazide, oxalodihydrazide, malonodihydrazide, succinodihydrazide, glutanodihydrazide, adipodihydrazide, pimelodihydrazide and suberodihydrazide. The polymeric material may be: (1) an acylated polyvinyl alcohol obtained by acylating a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol with diketene as described in Specification 654,855; (2) an interpolymer of an amide of a b -oxo-carboxylic acid and a b ,g -ethylenically unsaturated lower aliphatic amine, such as N-allylacetoacetamide, and a vinyl monomer such as acrylamide; (3) an interpolymer of a major amount of an acrylamide and a minor amount of a b ,g -ethylenically unsaturated lower aliphatic alcohol ester of acetoacetic acid, such as an allyl acetoacetate; or (4) an interpolymer of methyl vinyl ketone with acrylamide, methacrylamide, a -chloroacrylamide, a -fluoroacrylamide or a -bromoacrylamide. The gels of the invention may have incorporated a light-sensitive silver halide to form a photographic emulsion, whose ingredients, in addition to p the gel, may be potassium bromide, potassium iodide, sodium chloride, silver nitrate, ammonium hydroxide, citric acid, dyes and colour-formers.
