titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to processes of finishing textile fabrics
abstract Textiles are passed through an aqueous dispersion containing 1.92 to 10 per cent of solids consisting primarily of negatively-charged unagglomerated water-insoluble particles of polystyrene, styrene - isoprene copolymers, styrene-butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl acetals such as the formal and butyral, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers or polymerized acrylates such as polymethyl acrylate, the dispersion being free of other resins and other film-forming materials, and also free of cationic surface-active agents, the fabrics then being passed between squeeze rollers so as to deposit from 1.24 to 10 per cent by weight, of the solids, based on the fabric, then being dried. Plasticizers such as butyl ricinoleate, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate or castor oil may be present. The resins are usually prepared in aqueous dispersion in the presence of potassium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, with buffers such as sodium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, and emulsifiers such as alkali metal palmitate, stearate, and linoleate, and the sodium salt of an alkylated aromatic sulphonic acid. In one example (1), oleic acid, p - di - (hydroxy phenyl) - cyclohexane, sodium hydroxide and butyl ricinoleate are present with polyvinyl butyral in aqueous medium, while in another example styrene and isoprene are copolymerized in aqueous dispersion containing colloidal silica in addition to a catalyst, emulsifying agent and buffers, sodium hydrosulphite and di-tertiary butyl m-cresol sulphide then being added.ALSO:Textiles such as cotton, wool, nylon, cellulose acetate, and silk fabrics are made smoother and more resistant to wear by passing through an aqueous dispersion containing 1.92 to 10 per cent of solids consisting primarily of negatively charged unagglomerated water insoluble particles of polystyrene, styrene-isoprene copolymers, styrene-butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl acetals, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl acetatevinyl chloride copolymers or polymerized acrylates, the dispersion being free from other resins and other film-forming materials, and also free from cationic surface active agents. The fabrics are then passed between squeeze rollers so as to deposit from 1.24 to 10 per cent by weight of the solids, based on the fabric, and finally dried. Plasticizers may be present in the dispersion.
