titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of hydroxy acids
abstract o-Hydroxybenzoic acids and their salts are prepared from an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of an o-halogenobenzoic acid of formula <FORM:0653785/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen, halogen or a nitro group, by heating in a closed vessel in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate and a source of copper, followed if desired by acidification of the reaction mixture with a mineral acid, e.g. to pH 3. The source of copper may be the metal, copper bronze, or a copper salt, or preferably a mixture of copper and cuprous iodide. When R is a nitro group the reaction temperature is 110-160 DEG C., e.g. 135-150 DEG C., and when R is halogen between 160 DEG and 190 DEG C. 2 - Chloro - and 2 - bromobenzoic acid, 2-bromo-4-nitrobenzoic acid, and 6-nitro-2-chlorobenzoic acids may be used in the process. Examples are given of the preparation of 3-, 4-, and 5-nitrosalicylic acids, and 3- and 4-chlorosalicylic acids. Specification 600,640 is referred to.
