titleOfInvention A process for coating cellulose propionate articles and materials
abstract Cellulose propionate articles and materials are coated with a composition comprising a solution of cellulose nitrate in a homogeneous liquid mixture consisting substantially of a medium boiling solvent for cellulose nitrate, an aliphatic alcohol containing not more than five carbon atoms and an aliphatic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon fraction boiling below about 150 DEG C., said mixture having substantially no solvent action on cellulose propionate. The composition may be applied by dipping, brushing or spraying, and after application, the volatile solvent is evaporated off to leave a smooth, blush-resistant lacquer coating. The amount of solvent mixture depends on the method of coating; for example, per 100 parts by weight of cellulose nitrate, the mixture may contain 350-800 parts of medium boiling solvent, 350-800 parts aliphatic alcohol (with or without 30-50 parts ethyl alcohol present in the cellulose nitrate as purchased) and about 300-650 parts of the hydrocarbon. The medium boiling solvent may be amyl, butyl or secondary butyl acetate or the mono-methyl or mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol. The aliphatic alcohol may consist substantially of a propyl, butyl or amyl alcohol. Suitable hydrocarbon fractions are the naphthas sold under the trade names "Lactol Spirits," "Textile Spirits" and "V.M. and P. naphtha." Optional ingredients comprise pigments, dyestuffs, flatting agents such as diatomaceous earth or aluminium stearate, iridescent materials such as pearl essence, fluorescent and phosphorescent materials, resins or waxes. Plasticizers are undesirable. The cellulose nitrate coating may itself be coated with a thin layer of an organic derivative of cellulose containing an ultraviolet light absorber, such as phenyl salicylate, quinine bisulphate or fluoranthrene. In an example, articles moulded from a composition comprising cellulose propionate, dibutyl sebacate, and butoxy-ethyl stearate are dip-coated with a clear lacquer comprising 100 parts cellulose nitrate, 50 parts ethyl alcohol associated with the cellulose nitrate, 450 parts n-butyl alcohol, 450 parts secondary butyl acetate and 385 parts "Lactol Spirits." A further example describes the dip-coating of articles moulded from a composition comprising cellulose propionate and dibutyl sebacate with a lacquer comprising cellulose nitrate (100 parts), ethyl alcohol (50 parts), mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol (450 parts), n-butyl alcohol (450 parts), and "V.M. and P." naphtha (300 parts).
