titleOfInvention | Antioxidants from nonaldehydes and 2:4-dialkylphenols |
abstract | 1 : 1 - Bis - (21 - hydroxy - 31 : 51 - dialkylphenyl)-nonanes in which the alkyl groups contain one or two carbon atoms are prepared by heating a nonaldehyde with a 2 : 4-dialkylphenol in which the alkyl groups are methyl or ethyl in presence of an acid condensing agent. Suitable phenols are, e.g. 2-ethyl-4-methylphenol and 2 : 4-diethylphenol. In the examples, 3 : 5 : 5 - trimethylhexanal - 1 is heated with (1) 2 : 4-dimethylphenol and (2) 2-methyl-4-ethylphenol in presence of hydrochloric acid. Specification 525,737 is referred to.ALSO:1 : 1 - Bis - (21 - hydroxy - 31 : 51 - dialkylphenyl)-nonanes in which the alkyl groups are methyl or ethyl are used as anti-oxidants in the vulcanization of natural or synthetic rubber. In the examples, pale crepe rubber is vulcanized in presence of zinc oxide, blanc fixe, titanium dioxide, stearic acid, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and (1) 2:2:4-trimethyl-6:6 - bis - (21 - hydroxy - 31:51 - dimethylphenyl)-hexane; and (2) 2:2:4-trimethyl-6:6 - bis - (21 - hydroxy - 31 - methyl - 51 - ethylphenyl)-hexane. Specification 525,737, [Group IV], is referred to. |
