abstract | Dinitrohexachlorobutanes are prepared by treatment of the dimer of trichloroethylene with nitrogen tetroxide in a closed system at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. The temperature may be as high as 100 DEG C. but is preferably 79-81 DEG C. In the examples, trichloroethylene dimer is heated with nitrogen tetroxide for various reaction times. |
