titleOfInvention Process for reducing the extensibility of nylon cords and the like
abstract Cold-drawn thread, cord or other filamentary material made of nylon is subjected while stretched to treatment with an aqueous fluid at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C., whereby its extensibility is reduced. Conveniently the treatment may be combined with the curing of a precondensate of a thermosetting resin with which the nylon may be impregnated. The stretching load should be 30-50 per cent of the breaking load. In one form of the invention the nylon is immersed in boiling water for 20-30 minutes until it is set. The water may contain 5-10 per cent of a swelling agent such as formic acid, phenol or sodium sulphate. Preferably, however, the nylon is treated with steam at 120-160 DEG C. and at a pressure of 40-50 lbs. per sq. inch. In this form of the invention, impregnation with the solution of resin-forming materials can be carried out before the heat treatment without danger of washing out and the subsequent heating can be long enough to set the nylon and cure the resin. The nylon may be wound under tension on a package or bobbin and in this case it may be subjected to a short preliminary treatment with saturated steam at 100 DEG C. to facilitate the stretching operation. The resin may be urea-, phenol- or resorcinol-formaldehyde. In an example a nylon cord is drawn through a bath of 6 per cent aqueous resorcinol-formaldehyde, then through a tube containing saturated steam at 100 DEG C. and wound on a bobbin under tension. The tensioned cord is then treated in an autoclave under 45 lbs. pressure at 150 DEG C. for 20 minutes and conditioned in an atmosphere of 65 per cent relative humidity at 70 DEG F. Specification 616,549 is referred to.
