titleOfInvention | Improved manufacture of quaternary ammonium compounds |
abstract | Quaternary ammonium salts are obtained by treating with a benzyl halide an amine of the formula <FORM:0647275/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkyl residue with 10 to 18 carbon atoms and R1 is methyl or ethyl. In the example, p-(b -chlorethoxy)-laurophenone is reacted with dimethylamine to give p-(b -dimethylamino-ethoxy)-lamophenone which is then treated with benzyl chloride to yield the quaternary salt. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the formation of compounds of the above formula where R is a higher aliphatic or araliphatic residue whose carbon chain may be interrupted by a hetero-atom and R1 is not defined, by treating the corresponding halogen compound with a secondary amine. The product may be converted into a quaternary salt with an alkyl halide, alkyl sulphate or alkyl toluene-sulphonate. The preparation of chlorethoxy - laurophenone from chloroethyl phenyl ether and lauryl chloride is also described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
