titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the manufacture of rubber-tyred wheels, buffers or other articles having a peripheral cushioning ring or arc
abstract 647,141. Vehicle wheels. MAWBY, R., and HOLT, A. C. July 7, 1947, No. 17852. [Class 144 (i)] [Also in Groups V and XXII] A moulded rubbertyred wheel comprises a tyre 2, Fig. 2, and a disc part 1 having a central boss 3 and a well base rim or rim of channel-section4. The disc 1 is moulded or cast from a low-melting- point zinc alloy metal or from a plastic material, and may incorporate a bearing-bush 11. The tyre 2, Fig. 3, has circumferentially-recessed walls 7 pierced by lateral holes 8, and may have integral pips 23 for positioning the tyre in a mould. In the process of moulding, the metal or plastic material is cast or injected around the tyre to form the disc 1. By this means the material is caused to flow through the holes 8 and form bars 9 which connect and brace together the flanges or side walls 6 of the rim 4, effectively locking the tyre and disc together. In Fig. 6, the tyre is not circumferentially recessed, so that the walls 6 stand proud. If desired, beads or flanges 10, Fig. 5, may be formed to reinforce and key the tyre 2 to the rim in addition to the bars 9. Another form of interengaging means between tyre and disc is described, Fig. 7 (not shown), and the disc may be formed with radial spokes or the like. In the case of large and heavy wheels the tyre may have a square shaped tread portion. The holes 8 may be rectangular or oval.
