titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the preparation of ephedrine and salts thereof |
abstract | l-Ephedrine is obtained by rapidly hydrogenating l-phenylacetyl-carbinol between 0 DEG and 10 DEG C. in the presence of methylamine and a nickel-containing catalyst. The product may be converted into salts, e.g. the hydrochloride. The catalyst may be obtained by dissolving out the aluminium from a nickel-aluminium alloy, and may contain small amounts of other metals such as chromium, molybdenum, cobalt and platinum. The reaction may be accelerated by working under pressure, e.g. 20 to 30 kg. per sq. cm. In the examples, the catalyst is (1) Raney nickel, (2) platinized Raney nickel, and (3) chromium-activated nickel. dl-Ephedrine and l-pseudo-ephedrine are by-products. Specification 365,541 is referred to. |
