titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to refractory materials
abstract 645,386. Refractories; moulding refractory compositions. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). April 5, 1948, No. 9529. [Classes 22 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A refractory for heat-dropping glass articles comprises a major amount of a high alumina mineral and a colourant to absorb infra-red radiations which have been heated to a temperature above that required for the heatdropping, but below the fusion or vitrification point of the constituents. The mineral may be partially replaced by refractory plastic clay. Specified minerals include andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite, whilst colourants include green chrome oxide, rouge and manganese dioxide. To aid dispersion of the ingredients in the water before firing, sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, triethanolamine, lignin, morpholine, sodium gallate or tannic acid or mixtures thereof can be added. The plastic mixture is preserved by adding formaldehyde. Firing temperature is 2200‹ F. The refractory may be slip-cast, die-pressed or cast in a mould having movable blocks 11. whereby dimensions of the cast refractory are varied. A metallic band 12 retains blocks in their spaced relation in a retaining block 13. Lips 14 on the band 12 allow refractory to be poured into the mould between the blocks.
