titleOfInvention Ethyl cellulose hot-melt coatings
abstract A hot-melt coating composition comprises a thermoplastic ethyl cellulose and an amount of a lower alkyl ester of oxalic acid containing less than 6 carbon atoms in each alkyl group sufficient to stabilize the ethyl cellulose against substantial colour degradation. The ethyl cellulose may have an ethoxyl content of from 43.5 to 50 per cent and be of viscosity from 14-50 centipoises (determined on 5 per cent solutions in 80 : 20 toluene : ethyl alcohol at 25 DEG C.), this range being widened to 7-200 centipoises if desired. The alkyl oxalates may be added in amounts from 1-10 per cent. Other additional plasticizers may be added, such as trioctyl phosphate; dibutyl, diamyl, dioctyl, diphenyl phthalates; higher fatty acids; higher fatty alcohols; higher fatty acid esters; vegetable and mineral oils. Compatible thermoplastic resins with low acid numbers may also be added such as the glycerol, pentaerythritol or higher polyhydric alcohol esters of rosin, hydrogenated rosin, polymerized rosin, heat-treated rosin, alkyd resins modified with the above rosins, oil-modified alkyds, maleic-modified rosin-polyhydric alcohol esters, phenol-formaldehyde resins modified with the above rosins, unmodified phenol-aldehyde resins, coumarone-indene resins and the like. Other additional ingredients include waxes-paraffin, microcrystalline petroleum, carnauba, montan, candelilla, and Japan waxes-and viscosity stabilizers such as menthylphenol, diphenylamine, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, carbazole, diphenyl guanidine, sym.-di-b -naphthyl paraphenylene diamine, hydroquinone monobenzyl ether, hydroquinone mono-butyl ether, hydroquinone monoamyl ether, copper naphthenate, cupric chloride, cupric acetate. The compositions may be prepared in known manner by stirring, milling on hot rolls or mixing in a Banbury mixer. They may be applied by spraying, dipping and the like at 125-200 DEG C. In an example a series of compositions comprising (in varying amounts) ethyl cellulose, glycerol ester of hydrogenated rosin, carnauba wax, paraffin, mineral oil, hydrogenated castor oil, menthylphenol, diethyl oxalate and dibutyl oxalate are prepared and coated on paper. U.S.A. Specification 2,454,376 is referred to.
