abstract | Compositions comprising chlorosulphonated polymers or interpolymers of ethylene, propylene or isobutylene are used as coatings and as adhesives. The compositions after application to the articles are cured by heat and pressure. Specified interpolymers are chlorosulphonated ethylene-vinyl acetate, -vinyl chloride, -alkyl acrylate, or -alkacrylate. The compositions may include litharge, magnesia, zinc oxide, red lead, barum oxide, zinc stearate, lead abietate, magnesium adipate, lead sulphate, calcium carbonate, lead naphthenate, lead stearate, hydroperoxides, diacyl peroxides, dialkyl peroxides, stearic acid, rosin, diphenylamine, mercaptobenzothiazole, tetramethyl thiuramdisulphiade, phenyl - beta - naphthyl - amine, carbon black, titanium dioxide, barium sulphate, calcium sulphate, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, talc, sulphur, asphalt, factice, pine tar, dibutyl phthalate, diethylene glycol abietate, polyisobutylene, polythene, and pigments. The compositions may be applied as solutions in solvents such as xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, benzene, n-butyl acetate or carbon tetrachloride. The chlorination and sulphonation of the polymers may be effected by dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or benzene and treating the solution with chlorine and sulphur dioxide or sulphuryl chloride or a mixture of chlorine and sulphuryl chloride. Specifications 592,325 and 608,414 are referred to. |
