titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a method for alkylating polystyrene
abstract Polystyrene having a molecular weight above 3000 is alkylated with an alkyl halide, an olefin or a dimer, trimer or tetramer of propylene or butylene, at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C. in the presence of aluminium chloride and an organic nitro compound which is soluble in the mixture. Nitro compounds specified are nitroethane, nitromethane, nitropropane, nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene and nitronaphthalene. The polystyrene may be dissolved in o-dichlorobenzene, ethylene dichloride, carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride, dichloroethyl ether, monochlorobenzene, chloroform, chloronitromethane as well as some of the above nitrocompounds. Amyl chloride, tertiary butyl chloride, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated kerosene and butylene are specified as alkylating agents, as well as the dimers, trimers and tetramers above. By heating a solution of polystyrene of molecular weight above 60,000 with aluminium chloride the molecular weight is lowered and the alkylation is then effected to give an alkylated product soluble in mineral oil. Specifications 503,755, 509,823 and 640,567 are referred to.ALSO:To a mineral oil, in particular a Mid-Continent oil of 20 DEG F pour-point, is added an alkylated polystyrene prepared by treating polystyrene with an alkyl halide, an olefin or a dimer, trimer or tetramer of propylene or butylene at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C., in the presence of aluminium chloride and an organic nitro compound (see Group IV (a)). The amount of alkylated polymer is specified as being 0.1 to 12 per cent, preferably 1 per cent. Specifications 503,755, 509,823, [both in Group IV], and 640,567 are referred to.
