titleOfInvention | A process for the production of unsaturated carbonylic compounds |
abstract | Vinyl-type aldehydes and ketones, i.e. compounds containing an olefinic linkage between two carbon atoms of aliphatic character, one of which is directly linked to an aldehyde or ketone group, are obtained by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon containing at least three carbon atoms in the molecule with oxygen at elevated temperatures in the presence of cuprous oxide, the carbonylic compound having the same number of carbon atoms in the molecule as the olefinic hydrocarbon from which it is derived. The process may take place with added oxygen or the oxygen may be obtained from the cuprous oxide. Olefinic hydrocarbons include open chain and cyclic compounds and amongst many specified the following may be instanced: propylene, isobutylene, 4-methyl-pentene-1, cyclopentene and 3-methyl-cyclohexene. They may be present as mixtures with one another or with paraffins. The cuprous oxide is preferably supported on or mixed with carriers of conventional type. Thus cupric nitrate, cupric ammonium nitrate or other copper salt is deposited on a carrier, oxidized to cupric oxide and reduced to cuprous oxide. The preferred temperature range is 150-450 DEG C. and steam may be used as a temperature control. The catalyst may be fluidized although fixed bed catalysts are preferred. The carbonyl compounds may be obtained from the reaction products by scrubbing with a solvent, e.g. cold water with a wetting agent, followed by distillation. In examples: (1) propylene; (3) b -and (4) a -butylene together with oxygen and steam is passed over cuprous oxide on silicon carbide at 368 DEG and 355 DEG C., 310 DEG C. and 300-330 DEG C. respectively to give (1) acrolein, (3) and (4) methyl vinyl ketone and in (2) propylene, oxygen and steam are passed through cupric oxide on powdered pumice, the catalyst being agitated, at 375 DEG C., until reduced to cuprous oxide, and then at 325 DEG C. to give acrolein. |
