titleOfInvention Compounds of metacresol and 2:6-lutidine
abstract An addition compound of m-cresol and 2 : 6-lutidine which is used in the separation of m-cresol from p-cresol, is formed by adding 2 : 6 lutidine to m-cresol or to a mixture of m-cresol and p-cresol, containing a predominance of m-cresol, at a temperature sufficiently low to give crystals of m-cresol-2 : 6-lutidine. The reaction mixture is preferably cooled to below -55 DEG C. Purified m-cresol may be recovered from the addition compound by distillation or by decomposing with aqueous caustic soda. Preferably an excess of 2 : 6-lutidine is employed. In an example: 2 : 6-lutidine is added to a mixture of m- and p-cresol, crystals of m-cresol-2 : 6-lutidine are separated and fractionally distilled to give m-cresol. Specification 638,533 is referred to.
