titleOfInvention Solutions of polyacrylonitrile
abstract Polymers of acrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with other polymerizable substances, particularly vinyl or acrylic compounds, in which at least 85 per cent by weight of the copolymer is acrylonitrile, are dissolved in an organic compound having 4 or 5 atoms linked together to form a single ring structure, the components linked together to form said ring structure being selected from the group consisting of <FORM:0638331/IV (a)/1> , and -CH : CH-, and being further selected so that the components present in said structure include at least one -O- and at least one <FORM:0638331/IV (a)/2> ; these two components being preferably adjacent so as to form the grouping <FORM:0638331/IV (a)/3> Examples of suitable solvents are b -propiolactone, g -butyrolactone, methylene glycollate, anhydro-carboxy-glycollic acid, succinic anhydride, maleic anhydride and ethylene carbonate. More than one of these solvents may be used and there may also be incorporated other known solvents for polyacrylonitrile, such as dimethylformamide, or minor proportions of other materials which are miscible with the solvent, e.g. water, acetone and acetic anhydride. The solutions of the invention may be formed into films or shaped articles by normal procedures and in particular may be extruded into air at a temperature of 150-155 DEG C. or into an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol at a pressure of 100 lbs. per sq. inch of nitrogen, and the filaments obtained stretched to four times their original lengths after washing thoroughly in running water. Specifications 573,270, 579,887, 583,939, 584,548, 585,368 and 595,043 are referred to.ALSO:Methylene glycollate is obtained by heating glycollic acid with two molecular proportions of paraformaldehyde in benzene at 150 DEG C., separating the benzene layer and fractionating it to obtain the methylene glycollate; anhydrocarboxy-glycollic acid is prepared by reacting a solution of glycollic acid in dioxane with carbonyl chloride for three days, removing the solvent and heating the residue at 60 DEG C. at a pressure of 20 mm. of mercury for three hours.
