titleOfInvention Improvements relating to printing rollers and other articles made from synthetic resins
abstract A composition for treating articles made of synthetic resins (see Group IV (a)) comprises a solution, dispersion or emulsion of one or more of tricresylphosphate, dibutylphthalate, dioctylphthalate, dihexylphthalate and dicaprylphthalate in a light mineral oil, which is preferably a petroleum distillate having a viscosity of about 2 centistokes at 100 DEG F. and a boiling point range of 150 DEG to 200 DEG C.ALSO:A method for preventing the deterioration of or for restoring the deteriorated surface of a printing roller or other article made from a plasticized synthetic resin, the characteristics of resiliency and tackiness of which depend on its plasticizer content, consists in applying to the surface sufficient plasticizer to maintain these characteristics, or where deterioration has taken place, restore or partially restore them. The plasticizer may be applied by spraying, immersing, dipping or wiping down the roller in or with the plasticizer in liquid form or in or with a liquid containing the plasticizer in solution, dispersion or emulsion, or by producing the plasticizer in situ on the surface of the roller or other article by applying separate solutions or dispersions of substances which will react together to produce the plasticizer. Preferably the plasticizer is applied in solution, dispersion or emulsion in light mineral oil. The invention is particularly applicable to rollers produced from polyvinyl compounds, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral and polyvinyl acetal, or copolymers or mixtures thereof which have been plasticized with one or more of tricresyl phosphate, dibutylphthalate, dioctylphthalate, dihexylphthalate and dicarprylphthalate.
