abstract 637,200. Explosives. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. July 25, 1947, Nos. 20066 and 20067. Convention dates, Aug. 3, 1939, and March 16, 1940. [Class 9 (ii)] A high-explosive composition comprises an explosive nitric ester, e.g. nitroglycerin or nitrostarch, a water-soluble oxygen-yielding inorganic salt, e.g. ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, chlorates or perchlorates or mixtures thereof, and a starch product, capable of forming a cohesive paste with unheated water, whereof the major portion will pass a 60-mesh screen, or in place of the starch product, starch and an agent capable of gelatinizing the starch in the presence of water at ordinary temperatures. Less than 10 per cent of the starch product, e.g. flaked corn starch, wheat or oat kernels, may be used which has been rendered capable of gelatinization, say by heating to 85‹ C. 1-5 per cent of a gelatinizing agent may be included and suitable agents are e.g. thiocyanates such as ammonium or potassium thiocyanates, dicyandiamide, calcium cyanamide, urea, thiourea, iodides such as sodium or potassium iodides, sodium benzene sulphonate, sodium α-naphthalene sulphonate, sodium p-toluene sulphonate, zinc chloride, thioacetamide, sodium trichloracetate, thiobarbituric acid, sodium thiobarbiturate, sodium thioglycollate, sodium thiocyanacetate, hexamethylenetetramine, calcium chloride and stannous chloride. A lubricating agent, e.g. a vegetable oil such as castor oil, or a petroleum fraction should be added to the starch product before use and the explosive may include a water-insoluble metal soap such as calcium stearate. Examples also include nitrocellulose, chalk, sulphur and carbonaceous ingredients other than starch. Specification 415,136 is referred to.
