titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to power transmission fluids
abstract 636,873. Hydraulic fluids. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., SMITH, W. P., and WILKS, H. J. Jan. 11, 1946, No. 1082. [Class 69 (ii)] A fluid for transmission of power comprises a ricinoleic acid ester of a glycol monoether diluted with a glycol monoether. The glycol monoether employed as diluent may be the same as that employed for forming the ricinoleic acid ester. The monoethyl or butyl ethers of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol are particularly suitable as diluents but other monoalkyl ethers of glycol, diglycol or polyglycols may be employed. The fluid may also contain glyceryl tri-ricinoleate or castor oil, if desired with any free fatty acid neutralized with alkali. In examples, fluids are described consisting of Cellosolve ricinoleate or Carbitol ricinoleate, with or without castor oil. (The words " Cellosolve " and " Carbitol " are Registered Trade Marks.) For comparison purposes, fluids are described consisting of castor oil and Cellosolve or Carbitol, either neutralized with caustic potash or, in the case of the Cellosolve composition, treated with caustic potash according to the process of Specification 570,436. The Provisional Specification mentions propyl ethers of ethylene glycol as suitable diluents and also refers to the presence of a castor oil whose free fatty acid content has been esterified. It also mentions a composition containing Cellosolve, Cellosolve ricinoleate, glyceryl triricinoleate (containing saponified fatty acids) and glycerine. Specification 454,628 also is referred to.
