titleOfInvention Improvements in insecticides
abstract Beta-monohaloethyl esters of monohalogenated sulphonic acids are prepared by reacting an ethylene halohydrin with an acid halide of the selected monohalogenated benzene sulphonic acid, preferably by refluxing the reagents with or without an inert solvent such as benzene, xylene or tetrachloroethane. The reaction may also be effected by adding alkali to the mixture of reagents. Examples relate to the preparation of b -chloroethyl-p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b - chloroethyl - m - chlorobenzenesulphonate, b -bromoethyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b - chloroethyl p - bromobenzenesulphonate and b -chloroethyl-p-fluorobenzenesulphonate.ALSO:An insecticide comprises a beta-monohaloethyl ester of a monohalogenated benzene sulphonic acid, and a carrier therefor other than a solvent. Specified compounds are b -chloroethyl m- or p-chlorobenzene sulphonate, b -bromoethyl p-chlorobenzene sulphonate, b -chloroethyl p-bromobenzenesulphonate and b -chloroethyl p-fluorobenzenesulphonate. Specified carriers are mica, talc, pyrophyllite, and clays. The compounds may also be dispersed in a non-solvent medium such as water, if necessary with the aid of a dispersing agent such as the reaction product of ethylene oxide and castor oil. The poorer insecticidal activity of b -chloroethylbenzenesulphonate, ethyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, g -chloropropyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b ,b -dichloroisopropyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b ,g -dichloropropyl-dichloropropyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b ,b ,b -trichloroethyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate, b -cyanoethyl p-chlorobenzenesulphonate and b -chloroethyl 3,4-dichlorobenzenesulphonate is referred to.
