titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, and spliced electrical wire or cable including the improved adhesive tape
abstract Compositions suitable for use in pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes comprise (1) a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, a liquid phthalyl ester plasticizer amounting to 8 to 20 parts per 100 parts of the polymer and an alkyd resin in an amount at least equal to the amount of the liquid plasticizer, the total amount of the plasticizer and alkyd resin being from 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the polymer. Specified copolymers are vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride. The phthalyl esters may be dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate or butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate. The alkyd resin may be made by heating sebacic acid, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The composition may contain a stabilizer, e.g. calcium stearate, lead silicate, calcium silicate, triethanolamine, a mould-inhibiting agent, e.g. salicylanilide and pigments such as titanium dioxide; (2) butadiene-styrene copolymer, oil-soluble phenol-aldehyde resin, ester gum, coumarone-indene resin, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, paraffin oil, yellow pigment, heptane and alcohol; (3) butadiene-styrene copolymer, zinc oxide, carbon black, wood rosin, heptane and optionally an antioxidant. Composition (1) may be calendered into a film and compositions (2) and (3) used as pressure-sensitive adhesives.ALSO:Natural and synthetic rubber compositions suitable for use in pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes are composed of (1) butadiene-styrene copolymer and ammoniacal casein solution (2) butabiene-styrene copolymer, oil-soluble phenol-aldehyde resin, ester gum, coumarone-indene resin, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, paraffin oil, yellow pigment, heptane and alcohol (3) butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, thermoplastic terpene resin, toluol and methyl ethyl ketone. (4) latex crepe rubber, thermoplastic terpene resin, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, antioxidant, heptane and alcohol. (5) natural rubber, butadiene-styrene copolymer, zinc oxide, carbon black, wood rosin, heptane and optionally an antioxidant.
