titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the polymerisation of vinyl compounds
abstract Vinyl compounds such as methacrylic acid, its anhydride or esters thereof such as the methyl and glycol esters, acrylic esters, a -halogen acrylates, styrene, vinyl carbazole and vinyl esters, are polymerized in bulk in the presence of a sulphinic acid, or other organic derivative of sulphurous acid, no oxygen-yielding polymerization catalyst being present. Sulphinic acids specified are p-toluene, chlorobenzene, 2 - naphthalene, xylene, p - cymol, anthracene, benzyl and p-acetylamino-benzene sulphinic acids. The reaction may be carried out with no external heat, with mixtures of monomer and polymer or with hydroquinone present as inhibitor. The process is applicable to the manufacture of lenses, dental fillings and prostheses, artificial leather, lacquers and varnishes. The Provisional Specification describes the use of p-toluene sulphinic acid in polymerizing methyl methacrylate in aqueous dispersion containing oleic acid and also the use of a peroxide in conjunction with a sulphinic acid.
