titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to resinous compositions comprising amino-formaldehyde condensation products
abstract A composition comprises 95-75 parts by weight of a non-alkylated amino-formaldehyde condensation product as defined in B.S. 1203 and 1204 and 5-25 parts by weight of an alkyd resin modified to an oil length of 75-150 with an oil and/or fatty acid at least 50 per cent of the acid radicals of which either have less than 14 carbon atoms or are unsaturated, or are both of short chain length and unsaturated. Oil length is defined as the number of parts by weight of modifiers per molecular weight of polybasic acid. Preferably, the alkyd resin has an acid number of 30-70. Oils mentioned are castor, linseed, coconut, soyabean and cottonseed oil. Fatty acids mentioned are caproic, caprylic, capric, undecylenic, myristic, oleic, linoleic, ricinoleic, and the mixed acids obtained from certain oils. The products are useful for coating, laminating and moulding. Pigments may be included. The compositions may be thinned with water or water-alcohol mixtures, suitable alcohols being methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl. The pH of the mixture is preferably adjusted to 7.5 to 10.5 with diethylamino ethanol, triethanolamine, disodium acid phosphate, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, tri-ethylamine or guanidine carbonate. Examples of alkyd resins are A from castor oil, phthalic anhydride, glycerine and fumaric acid. B from coconut oil fatty acids, soya bean oil fatty acids, glycerine, phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid and C from soya bean oil fatty acids, glycerine, phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid. These resins are used as solutions in isopropanol. Other alkyd resin ingredients mentioned are maleic, adipic, suberic, azelaic and sebacic acid, and ethylene, diethylene and triethylene glycol, sorbitol and pentaerythritol. Examples of compositions are: (1) alkyd resin A, titanium dioxide, melamine-formaldehyde resin, aqueous ethanol and caustic soda. The ingredients are homogenized in a ball mill and the syrup applied to paper sheets which are laminated; (2) similar to (1); (3) similar to (1) with resin B in place of resin A; (4) similar to (1) with resin C instead of resin A; (5) alkyd resin A is mixed with aqueous urea-formaldehyde and melamine aldehyde resins and titanium dioxide, and the product used to laminate paper sheets. Other amino-formaldehyde resins referred to are those formed by reacting formaldehyde with melem, melam, formoguanamine, guanidine, dicyandiamide, guanyl urea or guanyl melamine. Other pigments mentioned are cobalt aluminium, oxides of cobalt, chromium oxide, ferric oxide and lead chromate. Other materials which may be laminated are glass cloth, paper fabrics, metals, cured thermosetting resins, plywood, impregnated wood. The compositions of the invention may be used as surface coatings only, other synthetic resins being used for the inner sheets. Specification 455,008 is referred to.
