titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to fumigating compositions |
abstract | A fumigating composition consists of a mixture comprising a thermally vaporisable pesticide, ammonium nitrate and at least one of the following solid sensitisers of the thermal decomposition of the ammonium nitrate:-a hypophosphite of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium, ferrous oxalate, stannous oxalate, ferrous formate, basic ferric acetate, ferric citrate, potassium chlorate, potassium nitrite, ammonium thiosulphate, anhydrous sodium thiosulphate, potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide, cuprous chloride, copper chromite, nickel chromite; the quantity of the solid sensitizer being sufficient to permit self-sustained gas producing thermal decomposition of the ammonium nitrate to take place readily in the presence of the pesticidal or insect repellent compound and the proportion of said pesticide being sufficient to ensure by its cooling effect that the reaction temperature will not be so high as to result in its destruction to any substantial degree during its vaporisation. The mixtures are preferably of such a composition that the temperatures produced during thermal decomposition are only slightly above the boiling point of the pesticide. One or more of the salts of chromic acid referred to in Specification 592,788 may also be incorporated in the above composition. D.D.T. and hexachloracyclohexane are examples of suitable pesticides. The composition in the form of a loose powder or compact mass and provided with ignition means may be packed into cartridges having suitable moisture-proof wrappings. |
