abstract 631,108. Variable condensers. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. June 28, 1946, No. 19381. Convention date, May 13, 1942. [Class 37] A variable condenser comprises a plate of insulating material 9, movable between two electrodes provided on each wall of a slit 3 in a common carrier 1 of homogeneous material. To obtain a low minimum capacity, the carrier 1, which is a cylinder of ceramic material, has an axial bore 2 and a transverse slot 4 provided in it, a spring 10 in a groove 11 serving to retain the plate 9 in position. The electrodes are confined to that part of the slit 3 which lies below the slot 4. The surfaces of the plate 9 may be covered with a conducting material, the two surfaces being connected, and in this case both the electrodes on the walls of the slit 3 and the plate electrodes may be coated with an insulator, e.g. quartz. In a modification, the slit is formed in one end of the cylinder, the plate being attached to a rod passing up the axial bore of the carrier. Specification 454,845, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
