titleOfInvention Production of novel setting compositions
abstract Liquid or plastic setting compositions comprise mixtures of an acetal thioplast having terminal hydroxyl groups with (a) an organic compound containing in the molecule at least two of the groups -NCX, where X is oxygen or sulphur, or with (b) a thermally unstable derivative of such an organic compound, which derivative has -NCX groups linked with other such groups or with other compounds and decomposes on heating with formation of such an organic compound. Suitable acetal thioplasts having terminal hydroxyl groups are those prepared by the method of Specification 618,440 from di-(beta-chlorethyl)formal or analagous di-(omega-chloralkyl)formals or from the corresponding acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde derivatives. The products are suitable for sealing fissures, e.g. in petrol tanks. Suitable organic compounds have the formula R(NCX)2, where R is an alkylene, arylene, or halo-arylene radical, e.g. ethylene-, trimethylene-, tetramethylene-, hexamethylene diisocyanates, propylene and butylene 1 : 2-diisocyantes, and butylene 1 : 3-diisocyanates; and o-, m-, and p-phenylene diisocyanates, 1 - methylphenylene - 2 : 6 - diisocyanate, 1 - methylphenylene - 2 : 4 - diisocyanate, 1 - chlorophenylene-2 : 4-diisocyanate, naphthylene - 1 : 4 - diisocyanate, and diphenylene - 4.41 - diisocyanate, or the corresponding isothiocyanates. Compounds of the type <FORM:0630488/IV (a)/1> , and compounds containing three or more isocyanate or isothiocyanate groups may also be employed; suitable thermally unstable compounds of polyisocyanates and polyisothiocyanates include addition compounds with arylene diamines or malonic esters and dimers such as dimeric-2 : 4-tolylenediisocyanate. In an example, a mixture of the liquid product made as in example 1 of Specification 618,440 and hexamethylene-1 : 6-diisocyanate was applied to a joint between aluminium sheets and set in a few hours and was strong and flexible in a week. The speed of setting can be increased by adding a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. tartaric or phthalic acid.
