titleOfInvention | A process for the preparation of chloral from choral alcoholate |
abstract | Chloral is obtained by reacting chloral with a carboxylic acid the ethyl ester of which preferably has a lower boiling point than chloral. Mixtures containing chloral alcoholate, e.g. the crude product obtained by chlorination of ethanol, may be used as starting material. Specified carboxylic acids are formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric, lactic, oxalic and benzoic acids. The ester produced along with the chloral may be separated by distillation. The reaction is preferably carried out at 50-100 DEG C. and in the presence of a minor proportion by weight of a volatile mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously and atmospheric or other pressure may be used. In an example a crude chlorination product obtained by chlorinating ethanol and containing chloral alcoholate, chloral and hydrochloric acid, is mixed with acetic acid and immediately distilled, yielding first an ethyl acetate containing fraction and then a fraction consisting of pure chloral. Specification 605,318 is referred to. |
