titleOfInvention | Improved process for the alkylation or polymerisation of hydrocarbons |
abstract | In a plate column, the overflow from the bottom plate is conveyed to a decanter for separating reaction products, and vapours rising from the base byepass through the bottom plate and bubble into the next plate. In a modification, the capacity of the bottom plate is enlarged and this plate itself forms the decanter.ALSO:<PICT:0627573/IV (b)/1> Polymerization or alkylation of hydrocarbons with an aluminium halide catalyst is effected continuously in a plate column to the top of which at least one of the reactants is fed, the height being calculated so that reaction is complete when the products reach the base, and which is heated by a counter-current of the vapours of a solvent used to dissolve the complex of aluminium halide and reaction product. The solvent may be an excess of one reactant, and the complex may be drawn off when it reaches the lowest plate. Dibenzyl and butyl chloride in the form of a complex with aluminium chloride are fed from tanks 1, 2 respectively to the top of a plate column 3 heated to give a base temperature of 95 DEG C. and a top of 60 DEG C. by means of reflux 5 from condenser 6 and cooler 7. Hydrochloric acid is absorbed in a coil 9. The complex produced, diluted in excess of butyl chloride, is removed at the base, decanted at 12, the lower layer returned to the top of the column by pump 13, and the upper layer hydrolyzed at 14 and decanted at 15 after washing. Polymerization may be effected in the upper part of a high plate column, and alkyl chloride supplied to an intermediate plate where polymerization is complete, if necessary with fresh aluminium halide. When one reactant is gaseous, as in alkylation with a gaseous chloride, this may be supplied to the base of the column. p In a modified column (Fig. 2, not shown), wherein the reflux 5 is returned in part to the top plates and in part to the base 4, liquid from the bottom plate is cooled and passed to the decanter while vapours from base 4 pass direct to the penultimate plate and thence rise from plate to plate. A further modification (Fig. 3, not shown), utilises the bottom plate as the decanter by increasing its capacity so that decantation is effected in the heated column. |
