titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to expanded resinous compositions
abstract In the production of expanded porous cellular resinous material by polymerizing a homogeneous mixture comprising an unsaturated alkyd resin, a liquid compound containing a CH2=C<group and having a boiling point of at least 100 DEG C. and being compatible with the alkyd, and a gas liberating material, cellulose acetobutyrate is included in the mixture to increase the viscosity thereof. There are specified: alkyd resins-containing a plurality of alpha-beta-enal groups and made from glycols or glycerol reacted with maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic, aconitic, or halogenated maleic acids which may be in part substituted by acrylic, beta-benzoylacrylic, methacrylic, 41-cyclohexene carboxylic, cinnamic, or crotonic acids; liquids containing CH2=C<groups-styrene and substituted styrenes, vinyl, acrylic, and methacrylic esters, allyl esters; polymerization catalysts-organic peroxides, terpene oxides, e.g. ascaridole, cobalt linoleate or naphthenate; gas liberating agents-diazo compounds, stabilized azo salts, carbon dioxide, alkali carbonates and bicarbonates; inhibitors-polyphenols, amines, phenolic resins, sulphur compounds, benzaldehyde, 1-ascorbic acid; fillers-asbestos, wood flour, glass, cotton, mica, cork, cellulose pulp, isopropenyl toluene, acrylonitrile and like thermoplastic polymers. In examples: (1) 2 parts alkyd resin, 1 part styrene, 0.1 per cent hydroquinone, 0.004 per cent cobalt naphthenate are mixed and 2 parts cellulose acetobutyrate added per 100 parts composition. The mixture is rolled for 24 hours until the viscosity is 18.64 poises. 50 parts of the thickened solution are mixed with 2.5 parts ammonium bicarbonate and 0.5 parts lauryl peroxide and heated for one hour at 100 DEG C. A uniform hard foam is obtained; (2) an alkyd resin is prepared by reacting 9 mols. diethylene glycol, 7.5 mols. fumaric acid, and 1.5 mols. sebacic acid and is mixed with 82 parts cellulose acetobutyrate, and 916 parts styrene; (3) porous compositions as obtained in (1) are used as interliners between two layers of glass cloth; (4) the composition is used to impregnate glass cloth; (5) two sheets of tin are coated with a methyl ether ketone solution of an ethyl acrylate-acrylamide copolymer and baked in an oven at 100 DEG C. to remove solvent. The polymerizable composition of example 1 is then placed between the two sheets and heated to cause it to foam up between the sheets which are then cured at 100 DEG C.
