titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to alkyl esters of alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acids and method of preparing same |
abstract | Alkyl esters of a -, b -unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a dialkyl sulphate with a b -lactone having at least one hydrogen atom connected to the a -carbon atom and which may carry other substituents. Preferably equimolecular proportions of reactants are used and the temperature is maintained below 30 DEG C. suitably between -30 DEG and 10 DEG C. The reaction may also take place under reflux in a solvent. b -Propiolactone is the preferred b -lactone, but lactones of the higher homologues may also be used. In examples, b -propiolactone is treated with dimethyl sulphate to give methyl acrylate and b -propiolactone is treated with ethyl sulphate to give ethyl acrylate. Corresponding derivatives are formed by replacing the above dialkyl sulphates with diisopropyl sulphate, dibutyl sulphate, diamyl sulphate or di-n-octyl sulphate. Specification 654,251 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of cycloalkyl, aryl and aralkyl substituted b -lactones; the b -lactones of unsaturated b -hydroxy carboxylic acids; mono- and di-lactones of dicarboxylic acids and lactones containing nitrogen, sulphur, oxygen or halogen atoms, e.g. a - or b -nitrophenyl b -propiolactone, b -(o-nitro-m-chlorophenyl)-b -propiolactone, b -(o-nitro-m-methoxyphenyl)-b -propiolactone, a -hydroxy-b -phenyl-b -propiolactone and a -chloro-b -propiolactone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
