titleOfInvention | Tetrazolyl disulphides as stabilizing agents for silver-halide emulsions |
abstract | Mercaptotetrazoles of the formula <FORM:0623112/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrocarbon group are prepared by reacting an isothiocyanate RNCS with sodium azide. Where R is an aliphatic group, the reactants are refluxed together in ethanol with the passage of CO2, but where R is an aralkyl or aryl group the passage of CO2 is omitted. The product is finally acidified. R may be alkyl such as methyl or nonyl, allyl, propargyl, butenyl, pentenyl, hexenyl, aryl such as phenyl, naphthyl or diphenyl, or aralkyl such as benzyl. Numerous isothiocyanates are specified, and the prepsaration of 1-methyl - 5 - mercaptotetrazole, 1 - phenyl - 5 - mercaptotetrazole and 1-allyl-5-mercaptotetrazole are described in detail. Tetrazolyl disulphides of the formula <FORM:0623112/IV (b)/2> wherein R is as above are prepared, where R is an aliphatic group, by oxidation of the water solution of the corresponding mercaptotetrazole with hydrogen peroxide or ferric chloride, or where R is an aralkyl or aryl group, by oxidation of the corresponding mercaptotetrazole with hydrogen peroxide or dilute nitric acid. Bis - (1 - methyltetrazolyl - 5) - disulphide is prepared by warming aqueous 1-methyl-5-mercaptotetrazole with aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Bis-(1-allyltetrazolyl-5)-disulphide is similarly prepared. Bis - (1 - phenyltetrazolyl - 5) - disulphide is prepared by boiling 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole with dilute nitric acid. |
