abstract Ester hydrochlorides of penicillamine (a -amino-b -mercaptoisovaleric acid) are manufactured by heating penicillamine hydrochloride in an anhydrous alcoholic solution of hydrogen chloride. The free esters are prepared by neutralizing an aqueous solution of the ester hydrochloride with sodium bicarbonate solution and extracting with chloroform. Examples p describe the preparation of the methyl and ethyl esters and ester hydrochlorides of d- and dl-penicillamine, and the benzyl ester hydrochloride of d-penicillamine.
