titleOfInvention | Improved process for degreasing hides and skins |
abstract | Pickled hides and skins are degreased by means of an organic solvent containing a small proportion of a quaternary ammonium salt having a long chain alkyl group comprising 8 to 20 carbon atoms, the treatment being effected under conditions such that the grease is dissolved or emulsified in the organic solvent. The quaternary ammonium salts exemplified comprise cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, dodecyl pyridinium bromide, cetyl pyridinium bromide, p-stearylaminophenyl trimethyl ammonium methyl sulphate, and b -stearylaminoethyl trimethyl ammonium methyl sulphate or mixtures of these compounds. The solvents specified comprise paraffin, petrol, solvent naphtha and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The pickled hides or skins are drummed with the solvent mixture at temperatures not exceeding 40 DEG C., and the residual solvent is then removed by one or more treatments with brine containing not less than 3 per cent salt to prevent swelling, at a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C., the brine being finally drained off. Specifications 428,148 and 453,523 are referred to. |
