titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the low temperature polymerisation of olefines
abstract High molecular weight polymers of those olefines and/or diolefines which polymerize to high molecular weight products at low temperature using a Friedel Crafts type catalyst are prepared by mixing with a solution of the monomer/s, a solution of a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst, the concentration of which is less than 0.1 per cent by weight, and which is introduced to the mixing zone at a high rate in a thick unbroken stream, the temperatures of all solutions being maintained below -10 DEG C. without the aid of an internal refrigerant. Monomers specified are isobutene, styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl xylenes, butadiene, cyclopentadiene and divinyl benzenes. Solvents specified are methylene, ethyl and methyl chlorides. An alcohol such as ethanol or isopropanol, which may be pre-cooled, may be added to quench the catalyst and precipitate the product. Specification 611,256 is referred to.
