titleOfInvention Manufacture and use of resinous condensation products
abstract Aminotriazine-aldehyde condensation products for impregnating paper and textiles to improve their wet strength and water resistance are prepared by causing an aminotriazine to react with an aldehyde and a bisulphite of an alkali metal or of an alkaline earth metal such as lithium, sodium, potassium, barium, calcium and strontium. The use of aminotriazines containing at least two free amino groups is disclaimed. The aminotriazine may be substituted melamines, such as chlorinated, alkylated or phenylated melamines or ammelide. Di-or tri-alkyl aryl or aralkyl melamines mentioned are 2 : 4 : 6 - triethyltriamino-1 : 3 : 5 - triazines, 2 : 4 : 6 - triphenyltriamino - 1 : 3 : 5 - triazine, 2 : 4 : 6 - trihydrazino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, 2-amino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, and 2-phenyl-4-amino-6-hydroxy-1 : 3 : 5-triazine. Mixtures of triazines may be used. The aldehyde may be an aliphatic aldehyde such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, heptaldehyde, hexaldehyde, furfural or an unsaturated aldehyde such as acrolein or methacrolein, or an aromatic aldehyde such as benzaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde, and the quantity may be 1-6 mols. per mol. of triazine, although an excess of up to 20 mols. per mol. of aminotriazine may be employed. The resin solutions are kept alkaline during the formation of the resin so that a water-soluble product results. In the example, 2 : 4 : 6-triphenyl-triamino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, formaldehyde and sodium bisulphite were refluxed at atmospheric pressure. An aqueous solution of resin with pH 8.5 was formed. The product may be recovered by spray or oven drying of the solutions. They may be dried by heating with or without an acid catalyst. They may be precipitated from solution by addition of acid, then dried and cured by heating. They may be precipitated on to paper fibres or textile materials. Specifications 595,366 and 595,367, [Group VIII], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the invention includes the use of any aminotriazine, and mentions melamine, ammeline, melam, melem or the like, monoalkyl, aryl- or aralkyl-melamines, 2-chloro-4,6-diamino-1,3,5-triazine, and 6-methyl-2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine. This subject-matter forms no part of the Specification as accepted.
