titleOfInvention Process of converting lignin predominantly into its aldehydic and acidic fractions
abstract Lignin-containing materials are treated to obtain an alkaline solution containing the sodium salt of vanillic acid by exposing basic calcium lignosulphate or other material containing lignin in aqueous suspension at an initial temperature of at least 50 DEG C. to the action of silver oxide in the presence of an excess of sodium hydroxide. It is preferred that the lignin containing starting material should be substantially free of cellulose and sugars. The silver oxide is preferably freshly prepared. It may either be preformed by adding sodium hydroxide to silver nitrate and filtering before adding to the reaction mixture or it may be formed in situ by adding silver nitrate to a sodium hydroxide suspension of lignin. The products of the reaction are extracted with ether and the extract washed with bicarbonate to give a solution of the sodium salt of vanillic acid. The silver is recovered from the residue from the ether extract.
