titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of organic fluorine compounds
abstract 2,4,6-Tri-ffluoromethyl)-s-triazines are prepared by reacting a polyfluoroethylene containing at least three fluorine atoms, of the general formula F2C=CFX, where X is hydrogen or halogen, with ammonia under substantially anhydrous conditions and at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an organic solvent such as diethyl ether, dioxane or benzene and there may be added cupric acetate to moderate the reaction. Preferably, a molar excess of ammonia is employed. The triazines are useful as pharmaceuticals, plasticisers, bactericides and dielectrics; on hydrolysis, they yield fluoroacetic acid. In examples: (1) anhydrous ammonia is reacted in an autoclave with tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of cupric acetate and yields 2,4,6-tri-(difluoromethyl)-s-triazine which, on hydrolysis, yields difluoroacetic acid; (2) anhydrous ammonia is reacted with chlorotrifluoroethylene in ether in the presence of cupric acetate in like manner yielding 2,4,6-tri-(chlorofluoromethyl)-s-triazine. Other triazines which may be prepared are 2,4,6-tri-(mono-fluoromonobromomethyl)- and 2,4,6-tri-(mono-fluoromethyl)-s-triazines. Additional starting materials mentioned are trifluorobromoethylene and trifluoroethylene. The Provisional Specification is not limited as regards temperature and the use of anhydrous conditions. Specification 583,264 is referred to.
