titleOfInvention Improvements in explosive compositions
abstract 606,892. Explosive compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 15, 1945, No. 15308. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1944. [Class 9 (ii)] A gelatinized explosive composition free from liquid explosive nitric esters comprises at least one other organic nitro compound in liquid form, nitrocellulose, ammonium nitrate as the principal explosive ingredient, and a smaller amount of a high velocity, normally solid explosive compound having a melting point above 100‹ C., e.g. tetryl, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, cyclonite (cyclotrimethylenetrinitranine) or ethylenedinitranine. Liquid organic nitro-compounds specified are nitromethane, nitroethane, nitropropane, nitrobenzene, mononitrotoluene, di-nitrotoluene and tri-nitrotoluene dissolved in liquid nitrotoluene. The content of nitro-compound is preferably between 20-35 per cent of the explosive composition, the ammonium nitrate is between 50-75 per cent (in which an inorganic oxidising agent, e.g. sodium nitrate, may be included), and the solid sensitising agent (preferably nitrocotton) is between 8-20 per cent and may be coated with 0.1-5.0 per cent of an oil, grease, wax or paraffin hydrocarbon. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the addition of trinitrotoluene with the normally solid explosive sensitizer. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
