abstract | Copolymers of vinyl fluoride are manufactured by heating a mixture of vinyl fluoride with at least one other compound having at least one ethylenic double bond in the presence of a catalyst to a temperature preferably between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C. under a pressure exceeding 50 atmospheres. Specified ethylenic compounds are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, pentenes, styrene; vinyl chloride or bromide, 1,1-dichloroethylene, 1,1-difluoroethylene, difluorochloroethylene, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene; vinyl formate, acetate or benzoate and vinyl esters of inorganic acids; vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl dioxolane; methyl vinyl ketone; N-vinyl succinimide or phthalimide; acrylic and methacrylic acids, methyl methacrylate, allyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, N-butyl methacrylamide and chloroacrylyl chloride; maleic anhydride, diethyl maleate or dimethyl fumarate; butadiene, chloroprene, divinyl benzene, cyclopentadiene; monovinylacetylene, divinylacetylene and dialkyl (vinylethinyl) carbinols. Specified catalysts are benzoyl or diethyl peroxides, hydrogen, barium, magnesium or zinc peroxides with optional addition of anhydrides of organic acids; ammonium or potassium persulphates, potassium percarbonate and perphosphate or sodium perborate; oxygen in amounts less than 1000 parts per million by weight, hydrazine sulphate or sebacate; trimethylamine oxide; lead tetraethyl and tetraphenyl; lithium butyl and silver acetylide; and light alone may be sufficient. Liquid polymerisation media are beneficial, suitable liquids being water, petroleum ether, benzene, or tert.-butyl alcohol. With aqueous media, buffers or dispersing agents may be employed, using soaps, alkenesulphonic acids or their salts, sodium alkyl sulphates, quaternary ammonium salts containing a long hydrocarbon chain, alkyl betaines, long chain primary alcohols or polyvinyl alcohol. The vinyl fluoride should be free from acetylene, hydrogen fluoride and large amounts of oxygen. The copolymers may be modified by using such solvents as carbon tetrachloride, bromoform and ethyl orthosilicate. The products are useful in the form of fibres, films or other moulded articles. Ingredients which may be mixed with the copolymers include cellulose derivatives, resins, plasticisers, stabilisers, pigments, filling materials or dyes. The copolymers from vinyl fluoride and vinyl acetate may be hydrolysed to form products which are soluble in dimethyl formamide, dioxan, pyridine and a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone with dioxan or methoxy ethanol. Specifications 469,421, 581,899 and 605,445 are referred to. |
