titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to polyhydric phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives
abstract A cold setting, resinous, adhesive composition comprises a liquid mixture of (a) a permanently fusible resorcinol-formaldehyde resin made by condensing resorcinol and formaldehyde in a ratio of less than 1 mol. formaldehyde to 1 mol. resorcinol, (b) a formaldehyde liberating setting agent, and (c) a solvent, the composition having a pH outside the range of 2.5-6. Setting agents specified are formaldehyde, paraform, alkaline earth methylol sulphamates or a phenolic casting syrup having a formaldehyde/phenol ratio of the order of 2/1 to 3/1 and may be added just before use to adjust the pH to the required figure. In examples: (I) the adhesive base is formed from a mixture of 2500 pts. resorcinformaldehyde resin having a pH below 2.5, 1250 gs. water and 500 pts. walnut shell flour and for use 100 gs. of the base is mixed with 25 gs. 37 per cent formaldehyde; (II) 2500 pts. 20-40 mesh resorcin-formaldehyde two-stage resin, 834 pts. Solox solvent alcohol, 416 pts. water, 500 pts. walnut shell flour. Tables are given in the Specification of the solvents which may be used according to the invention. These correspond with the tables given in Specification 613,106. Similar fillers may also be used. The adhesive is suitable for bonding laminates of steel, asbestos, rubber, paper, nylon, leather and the laminates thus obtained may be used in the manufacture of aeroplane parts: doors, tabs, rudders, struts, spars, sections and propellers; furniture, houses, boats, beams, skis. Specification 605,186 also is referred to.
