titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polymerisation processes |
abstract | Polymers and interpolymers are made by subjecting organic compounds containing a polymer-producing linkage to elevated temperature and pressure, e.g. between 60 DEG and 400 DEG C. and exceeding 4 atmospheres, in the presence of an organic polyperoxide and preferably in the presence of water and/or an organic medium. Organic polyperoxides contain two or more peroxy linkages and are obtained by reacting under peroxide-forming conditions one or more ketones or aldehydes or mixtures thereof. Specified aldehydes and ketones are acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, cyclopentaldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural, glyoxal, methyl glyoxal, acetylbenzaldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, cyclohexanone, mesityl oxide, diacetyl, acetyl acetone, diphenyl ketone and benzoin. The preferred polymerizable compound is ethylene (preferably containing less than 200 parts per million of oxygen); others listed include carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, propylene, the butylenes, tetrafluoroethylene, vinylidene chloride and fluoride, vinyl chloride, fluoride, acetate, propionate, benzoate, isobutyrate, thiolactate, dimethyl and trimethyl acetates, laurate and hexanoate, vinyl ketones, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters, nitriles, amides and anhydrides and N-vinyl imides. The polymerization may be carried out as a batch, semi-continuous or continuous process. Specified solvents or diluents which may be used are tert.-butyl alcohol, isoctane, benzene and ethers. In examples, the batch and continuous polymerization of ethylene is described using as catalysts hetero-polyperoxides obtained from acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, acetone and cyclohexanone, and using 3-6-diphenyl-s-tetroxane. Specifications 578,584 and 582,890 are referred to. |
