titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of 1-รบรต-ribitylamino-3.4-xylol
abstract 1-d-Ribitylamino-3 : 4-xylol is obtained by reacting d-ribose in the presence of at least 1 mol. of boric acid with 1 mol. of 3 : 4-dimethylaniline per mol. of d-ribose in a solvent miscible with water at a pH of about 4 and hydrogenating using a Raney nickel or palladium charcoal catalyst in the presence of an alcoholic solvent at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. In examples: (1) d-ribose and boric acid in water are reacted with 3 : 4-dimethylaniline in alcohol and the product hydrogenated using a Raney nickel catalyst to produce 1-d-ribitylamino-3 : 4-xylol; (2) as in (1) using acetone instead of alcohol as the solvent; (3) d-ribose and d-arabinose in water are reacted with 3 : 4-dimethylaniline in alcohol, whereupon only d-ribose forms a condensation product which is worked up as in (1); (4) d-ribonic acid lactone is reduced in the presence of boric acid using a mercury cathode and the product condensed with 3 : 4-dimethylaniline followed by hydrogenation.
