titleOfInvention Improvements in oil phase polymerization
abstract A mixture of an alkyd resin obtained from polyhydric alcohols and unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides and compounds having a single CH2=CX- group, where X is a negative group or radical are copolymerized at a temperature below 50 DEG C. in the presence of an oxygen containing polymerization catalyst and a compound having the structure <FORM:0603325/IV(a)/1> where Ar is an arylene group and X is =CH2; =CHOH; =CO; =C.NH; =CHC6H5 or =CH.C6H4NR2, and R is an alkyl group. Alkyd resins specified are those obtained from maleic, fumaric, citraconic, itaconic, mesaconic, aconitric, chlormaleic, or carbic acids condensed with ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 2,2-dimethyl propane-diol-1,3, glycerol, pentaerythritol, 1,3-butane diol, p trimethylene glycol, or 2-ethyl-2-butyl butane-diol-1,3. The resins may be modified with monohydric alcohols, saturated mono- or poly-carboxylic acids, drying or semi-drying oils. Monoenic compounds specified are styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, and acrylo- and methacrylo - nitriles. Benzoyl peroxide is specified as the polymerization catalyst. The methylene diamines specified are 4,41-(tetramethyldiamino) - diphenylmethane, 4,41-(tetraethyldiamino) - diphenylmethane, 4,41 - (tetra - methyldiamino) - benzophenone, 4,41 - (tetra - methyldiamino)-benzhydrol, 4,41-(tetramethyldiamino) - 1,11-dinaphthylmethane, 4,41-(tetramethyldiamino)-triphenylmethane, and di - (p - dimethylaminophenyl) - methylenimine. Inhibitors such as t-butyl catechol may be present. Specifications 540,167 and 540,168 are referred to.
