titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the fuels for diesel and like engines |
abstract | Fuels for starting and running high-speed compression ignition engines at low temperatures comprise a hydrocarbon Diesel fuel base, preferably having a cetane number of at least 40, blended with a normal dialkyl ether boiling below 100 DEG C., the ether constituting from 5 to 80 per cent by volume of the blend. The ether may be diethyl, ethyl propyl or methyl ethyl ether, and may constitute from 20 to 60 per cent and preferably from 40 to 50 per cent by volume of the blend. The incorporation of ethers of the above type in the fuel is said to lower materially the temperature at which Diesel engines can be started and to lower the cloud and pour points of the fuel, the operating efficiency of the engines at low temperatures being thereby improved. In an example, 50 per cent by volume of diethyl ether is blended with 50 per cent of conventional Diesel hydrocarbon fuel of 35 S.S.U. viscosity at 100 DEG F. Specification 599,132 is referred to. |
