titleOfInvention Improved method of polymerisation
abstract Ethylenic substances are polymerized in aqueous media in the presence of a water-soluble persulphate, a water-soluble salt of an oxy-acid of sulphur with reducing properties and a water-soluble metal salt which increases the speed of interaction between the persulphate and the salt of the oxy-acid of sulphur. Monomers specified are vinyl acetate and chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene and the esters, amides and nitriles of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric and maleic acids. Persulphates specified are those of ammonia, potassium and sodium. Salts of oxy-acids of sulphur specified are sodium sulphite, hydrosulphite, sulphoxylate, pyrosulphite, bisulphite, metabisulphite and thiosulphate, and addition compounds of any of these with an aldehyde or ketone, such as sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. Specified metal salts are cupric, ferric and titanium sulphates, vanadium chloride and silver nitrate. Salts of the higher state of valency are preferred where such exist. The media may also contain soaps, water-soluble long-chain quaternary ammonium salts, citric acid, disodium hydrogen phosphate, water-soluble esters of the fatty alcohols and salts of sulphonated animal and vegetable fats and oils, and water-soluble cellulose ethers. The polymerization may be carried out in a closed vessel with air or an atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide present.
